N.B., Aubrey Brain returned
as co-principal horn of the LSO with Thomas Busby in November 1923, following
the departure of Alfred Brain, who emigrated to America in September 1922. Thomas Busby or Henri van der Meerschen will
be heard in the principal horn solos on any recordings between September 1922
and November 1923. The co-principal arrangement lasted until Busby’s
resignation on 4 April 1924 so any recordings between these dates will be
either Aubrey Brain or Thomas Busby. See Stephen Pettitt, Dennis Brain a
biography, Hale, 1989, pp.42-43.

This is a very complicated set with sides conducted by Dr Leo Blech and Karl Muck with soloists (Ivar Andrésen, bass, Desider Zador, baritone, Rudolf Laubenthal, tenor, Tilly de Garmo, soprano, Fln Kindeamann, soprano and Fln Marker, soprano) and the Berlin State Opera Orchestra. Unfortunately, for the purpose of this discography, the Berlin items are mixed on the same discs as the sessions with the LSO. Below, I list both orchestras in order to make it clearer which sides are LSO, which Berlin State Opera Orchestra. The Berlin items are in italics. The LSO is conducted by Albert Coates and Lawrance Collingwood. I use my copy of the HMV catalogue (1935, p.314) as a guide to the personnel on these records.

Bradley = Francis Gilbert Bradley (b.19 Rochester Road, Camden Town, London 12 Aug.1898-d.12 Barn Hill, Wembley, Middlesex 29 Nov.1986). Son of Friedrich Adolph Borsdorf (b.25 Dec. 1854-d.15 April 1923) and Sybel Stuart Borsdorf, née Hambleton (b.23 Aug. 1867-d.19 Oct. 1956). Francis changed his surname to Bradley.
Francis Bradley had a high regard for Aubrey Brain, although they did disagree about the type of instrument. In the BBC Symphony, Aubrey insisted on the French type of instrument and when Francis Bradley joined the BBC, he had to adopt the same instrument as the rest of the section. Before joining the BBC, he had been playing on an Alexander 103 double horn as principal of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Bradley’s Alexander was one of the very few to be first used professionally in England. Literature:
